Our 2025 Annual Toy Shop & Visit to Ward 18

November 2025 marked one of the most special days in our calendar — our annual toy shop.

This year, the team took over Smyths Toys bright and early on a very chilly Saturday morning. The store generously allowed us access before opening, and from the moment those doors opened, it was game on!

Armed with trolleys (and big kid energy), we quite literally went wild in the aisles. It’s still hard to believe how quickly we managed to spend just shy of £8,000 — but when it’s for such an important cause, every penny is worth it.

The toy shop has become more than just a tradition. It’s our reward for a year of hard work, fundraising, and dedication — and without fail, it’s one of the highlights of our year.

From Toy Store to Hospital Ward

Once the cars were fully loaded, we headed straight to Birmingham Children's Hospital and made our way to Ward 18.

The parents’ faces said it all — surprise, relief, gratitude. But it was the children’s excitement that truly made the day unforgettable.

One little girl completely stole our hearts. She hadn’t been out of bed for three days, and then suddenly she zoomed past us on a scooter, beaming from ear to ear. Seeing that transformation in such a short space of time was simply incredible.

Children came out of their rooms and, with the help of their parents, carefully chose their toys. For a little while, hospital routines and medical worries were replaced with smiles, laughter, and the buzz of excitement. The surprise broke up the boredom and brought a much-needed lift to the ward.

Supporting Parents Too

This year, we also brought food vouchers for parents.

Having experienced hospital stays ourselves, we understand how limited meal options can be. One parent shared that they hadn’t eaten a proper meal in three days. Being able to order a takeaway and sit down to eat something warm made a real difference.

Sometimes it’s the simplest things that mean the most.

Leaving a Lasting Impact

We left Ward 18 with spirits high and arms empty — but hearts very full.

There were still plenty of toys stored in the play specialist’s office, ready to be handed out in the following days and used to restock the communal play area.

We’re also thrilled to share that we still have funds remaining. We’re continuing to add to this total and are now in discussions with the ward about purchasing equipment that will stay permanently — something that will benefit children long after the toys are unwrapped.

Days like this remind us exactly why we do what we do.

Thank you to our amazing team, Smyths Toys team and everyone who supports us throughout the year — this is your impact in action. 💕🎗️
